Types of Dental Emergencies

Severe ToothachesWhen a cavity becomes deep enough to reach the pulp (the area inside your tooth that contains many nerves) severe pain can develop. A root canal is often needed when decay has spread into this area and the pain will only increase if treatment is delayed.

An abscess near the root of the tooth can go unnoticed until it begins to cause pain. This condition requires antibiotics and may require a root canal or extraction.

Until you are able to visit our office, you can relieve your tooth pain at home using a warm compress, aspirin taken orally (not placed onto tooth or gum) and a topical analgesic like Orajel®.

Dental Trauma – Dental injuries are common in children, athletes, and other active people. If you experience a facial injury it can result in cracked, broken, or dislodged teeth. It is vital that you contact our dental office right away.

Before you arrive at our office, you can take steps to preserve chipped, broken, or dislodged teeth by doing the following:

If your tooth is completely dislodged, gently clean it without removing any connected fibers, and place back into its socket, biting down gently on the way to our office. This will keep the socket and tooth from drying out and can improve your outcome.

Permanent teeth that have become dislodged in a child can be placed in milk, or lightly salted water to avoid choking by keeping it in the mouth. Lost baby teeth do not need to be replaced, however, the child should be seen by a medical professional if the tooth loss was caused by an injury.

Also keep any pieces of any broken teeth in milk, or slightly salted water until you get to the office.

These measures help our Plainville emergency dental provider is re-integrating your teeth and gums.
